Zilveren ducaton of Zilveren Rijder, Overijssel

Silver ducaton Overijssel 1733, VOC shipwreck 't Vliegend Hart
Silver ducaton Overijssel 1733, VOC shipwreck 't Vliegend Hart

This merchant ship belonged to the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) and was first launched in 1730. Just starting her on her second journey to the East Indies on February 3rd 1735, 't Vliegend Hart was driven onto a sandbar during a gale and was lost with all men on board.

In 1981 the location of the wreck was rediscovered and the treasure was painstakingly salvaged. The discovery of several boxes with silver Riders in 1990 finally confirmed the suspicion that money was being smuggled on board, probably by one or more senior officials. These coins were not recorded on any official document and were found in separate boxes.
