The Celts included several groups of Iron Age tribal people occupying much of northern Europe, Spain, Gaul and the British Isles. They started issuing coins from the late 4th century BC, heavily influenced by trade with the style of the Greek coins, especially Macedonian coins of Philip II and Alexander the Great.
Gradually the style became more abstract and Celtic symbols were used (e.g the triskele).
