Egypt was a dominant civilization in ancient history. Their advanced technology and access to gemstones and precious metals resulted in a society which highly valued personal adornment.

Jewellery was worn by both men and women from all social classes, and the deceased were sent off into the afterlife with a rich selection of jewellery.

The Egyptian nobility favoured bracelets, necklaces, earrings, amulets and pendants, crafted from gold and copper which was mined in the Nubian desert. Silver was not readily available in Ancient Egypt, this had to be imported.

Lavish designs, inlaid with (semi-)precious stones and gems were highly prized. Lapis lazuli, obsidian, garnet, rock crystal, carnelian, pearls and emeralds were the most commonly used stones native to Egypt. For the lower classes, the use of faience (glazed ceramic) allowed them to imitate the bright colours of real gemstones. Egyptian faience was exported widely in the ancient world and can be found in Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean and in northern Europe.
