Diocletian, Roman Emperor from 284 AD to his abdication in 305 AD. Diocletian rose through the ranks of the Roman military and was proclaimed Emperor after the deaths of Carus and his son Numerian on campaign in Persia.
In 286 AD he appointed Maximian as Augustus, co-Emperor to reign in the Western Empire while Diocletian ruled the Eastern Empire. In 293 AD Galerius and Constantius were appointed as Caesars thus forming a 'tetrarchy' meaning a 'rule of four'.

Weakened by illness, Diocletian abdicted the Imperial office on 1 May 305 AD. He was the first Roman Emperor to abdicate this position voluntarily and lived out his retirement in his palace on the Dalmatian coast.
