Anastasius I Dicorus, Eastern Roman Emperor from 491-518 AD. He is often cited for his prudent management of the finances of the Empire and introduced more efficient administrative practices. He introduced a new monetary system with three denominations of gold coins (solidus, half and third solidus), five copper coins (follis of 40 nummi with fractions down to a nummus).

The letter M appears on coins of Anastasius, Justinus I, Justinus II and other Emperors of the East and was introduced by Anastasius I in his new monetary system. To make sure there was no doubt of the value of the coin a huge Greek numeral M (=40) was spelled to indicate the value of 40 nummi.
