Parchment with seal of Maria Theresia, Empress of Austria

Date: 31 January 1774

Handwritten parchment with the large Imperial seal of Maria Theresia in a round tin skippet attached to the parchment. The document is composed in French and dates from 31 January 1774. It is several pages long, these have not been deciphered completely.

The first page is occupied with an enumeration of the titles of Maria Theresia. The subject is a land property of 211 vergers (old French measurement), situated in the village of Beirleere (Berlare), near Alost (Aalst). Several names are mentioned in the document: Pierre Cauwens, Jean Baptiste Thoen and Cornelis d'Hooghe, as well as the governor of the Austrian Netherlands, Duke Charles Alexander of Lorraine (brother-in-law of Maria Theresia) listed with his noble titles and title as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order.

The red wax seal is showing the enthroned Empress Maria Theresia on one side, her coat of arms on the reverse.

Attached is a second document (in Dutch), dealing with a public sale of the same property of 211 vergers in the village of Beirleere on 29 December 1776. Included are the increasing bids on the day of the sale with Joseph Valck listed with the final bid.

Diameter seal: ± 12,6 cm
