On 23 January 1579, the five provinces of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and Friesland United Provinces formed themselves into a federal state in the Union of Utrecht. Overijssel joined the five provinces in the same year, Groningen followed in 1594. In July 1581, members of the northern provinces deposed Philip II. In 1795, the French temporarily establish the Batavian Republic, which replaces the United Provinces.
