A hand-spindle is an implement for holding wool or flax to spin into thread. A spindle whorl was wedged on the symmetrical thickening near the lower end. The whorl adds momentum to the rotation of the spindle and is essential to the spinning process. The great majority of spindles were made of wood, only a small number were made of other materials such as bone or even silver. Whorls were made of wood, clay, stone or metal and have a hole in the center.
