Birdiware originated in ancient Persia and was brought to India in the 14th-15th century during the rule of the Bahamani Sultans. A metal alloy, consisting of zinc and copper, is blackened and inlaid with thin sheets of pure silver or brass. Traditionally various flowers, leaves, stylized poppy plants and geometric designs are used to adorn the pieces.
