China, sculpture of the Daoist Immortal Li Tieguai

Period: 1900-1925

Finely hand carved Chinese root wood sculpture of the Daoist Immortal Lie Tieguai, depicted with his attributes: a gourd, bat and crutch. A cockerel is standing at his feet.
He is standing on an open rock work base on one leg, second leg is raised and rests on his crutch. A rolled mat and hat in the form of a large lotus are strapped to his back, gourd with vapour cloud and bat on top over his left shoulder.

Complete with inset glass eyes and bone teeth. Very skillfully carved details and facial expression, open robe showing his ribs.

Li Tieguai, one of the Eight Immortals (the crippled beggar) is known for his benevolence to the poor, sick and needy and dispensed medicine from his gourd. The bat is a symbol of happiness and longevity. The cockerel or rooster is symbolic for courage.
