In an attempt to stop gold Nobles being exported for profit to the continent the value of the gold Nobles was raised from 80 pence to 100 pence. In 1464 Edward IV introduced a new coin to replace the Noble: the gold Ryal (or Rose Noble), worth 10 shillings and weighing 120 grains (120 pence). It did not prove popular in England and was discontinued in 1470. The design however was very popular on the Continent where it was copied during the 16th century (Rozenobel).

The design with the King, holding sword and shield, standing in a ship with a rose on the hull and a banner bearing the letter 'E' at the stem was also used on the Ryal and half-Ryal. The gold Ryal was later also issued by Henry VII, Queen Mary (at a higher value of 15 shillings) and Queen Elizabeth.

The earliest coin weights are round with the obverse design of the coin; later coin weights are square.
