Floris V was the son of Count William II (1234-1256). William was elected as Roman King in Woeringen on the 3rd Octover 1247. In 1255, he was invited by Pope Innocentius IV to travel to Rome to be crowned Emperor. Prior to his coronation he was defeated on the battlefield near Hoogwoud on 28th January 1256 on a campaign against the Frisians. It would take 26 years for his son Floris to recover his body and have it buried in the abbey church of Middelburg.
Floris V introduced the gros tournois to the monetary system. Influenced by the English coinage, he also replaced the double cross with a single cross during his reign.
