Count Baldwin IX of Flanders, Baldwin VI of Hainaut and Baldwin I of Constantinople (born July 1172, died circa 1205).
He was one of the most prominent leaders of the Fourth Crusade which resulted in the capture of Constantinople and the foundation of the Latin Empire. He was crowned as the First Emperor of the Latin Empire in Constantinople on 16th of May 1204. Together with Dandolo, Doge of Venice and the Count of Blois, Baldwin besieged Adrianople in Thrace. On April 14 1205, the Frankish knights were defeated and the Emperor disappeared after being captured by the Bulgarians. A report by Tsar Kaloyan to Pope Innocent III stated Baldwin had died in prison.
His brother Henry was crowned Emperor in August 1206, his daughter Joan succeeded him as Countess of Hainaut and Flanders.
