Galeazzo II Visconti (circa 1320 - 4 August 1378)
Lord of Milan, member of the Visconti dynasty. During his life Galeazzo faced several rebellions while he also managed to expand his territories. After the death of his brother Matteo II he obtained the western part of Lombardy.
His daughter Violante was married to Lionel of Antwerp (son of King Edward III of England) with a dowry of 200.000 gold florins. His son Gian Galeazzo married Isabelle of Valois, daughter of the King of France.
He was handsome and distinguished, made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and founded the University of Pavia, but  is also infamous for instituting the quaresima (40 days of torture).
After his death in 1378, he was succeeded by his brother Bernabó Visconti. In 1385 his son Gian Galeazzo Visconti gained control of Milan by overthrowing his uncle Bernabó. Ten years later, in 1395 Gian Galeazzo Visconti became the first Duke of Milan.
