Salt cellars in silver or pewter were important vessels on the medieval dining table. Even a person's placement at the dinner table was indicative of his/her social status (above or below the salt). Often they were elaborately decorated and inscribed. Salt was an expensive preservative and condiment and was used much more than it is today.
