Limoges copper enamelled applique with Pelican in her Piety

Limoges copper enamelled applique with Pelican in her Piety

Period: 1325-1350

Quatrefoil enamelled and rounded plaque / applique depicting the Pelican in her Piety feeding her young with her own blood. This was seen as a symbol of redemption. The nest contains three young birds and is situated in a tree, the stem is surrounded by a snake.

Gilded copper with lapis colour champlevé enamel, some traces of gilding and red enamel at the borders. The applique has 4 pinholes for attachment. The remnants of the beeswax on the inside indicates this could have been the top decoration of a seal box or base applique from a candlestick.
