When a person became a member of a guild, he received two medallions: one membership medal which he took home and one funerary medal which was kept at the guild. When a guild member or his wife passed away all members were officially notified by a servant of the guild (gildeknecht) by the receiving of their personal funerary medal. These were then collected at the funerary service as evidence of their presence. A guild member was obliged to attend in person or could be represented by his wife. Those who did not do so had to pay a fine.
