In 1875 a six-metre hill was discovered in Brunssum (Limburg, the Netherlands), completely filled with pots and shards. In the following years more waste mounds of medieval pottery workshops and kilns have been discovered. The soil type of this particular area in southern Limburg (low iron clay) is very suitable for pottery making as it can withstand high temperatures. This makes Limburg pottery (Brunssum-Schinveld) a special category among the Dutch pottery. It was produced between mid 11th - mid 14th century and was exported mainly to the Rhineland, Brabant, Limburg and even further afield.
