Roman bronze "Wolf's head" fibula

Period: 2nd-3rd century AD

Eastern Roman Empire, Aucissa military brooch with zoomporhic head of a wolf.

This high arched tapering bow brooch belongs to the Aucissa group of fibulae. Between the bow and the foot it shows a zoomorphic head which resembles a wolf with a long snout. The snout ends in a circular knob which encloses the axis bar. The bow is decorated with circular dots and a ribbon pattern. Towards the beginning of the axis bar is another zoomorphic head with ears and circular dots which are forming the eyes.
