Balsamaria, or ointment jars, were filled with precious oils or unguents to be used in Roman baths. Applying oil and then scraping it off with a strigil (slightly curved blade-like tool) was a common part of the bathing ritual. Balsamaria were produced in a variety of forms, including busts and animal shapes.
