Silver Denarius with various banker's marks on the obverse, minted around 79 BC under the authority of the moneyer C. Naevius Balbus.

Obverse: Diademed head of Venus facing right, S C behind.
Reverse: Victory in triga to right, control-mark XVIIII above, C. NÆ.BAB in exergue.

Serrated coins (serratus) was a safeguard against the manufacture of fouree coins (counterfeit coins). Notches were cut all around the edge of the flan before striking. This effort was not completely successful as there are known examples of silver plated denarii with copper cores.
