In the mid 17th century, Enkhuizen was one of the most important harbour cities in the Netherlands. As one of the six Chambers of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) it became an important trading centre in Northern Europe, trading with the East Indies, the Arctic Sea and the New World. In the 17th and 18th century it was also an important shipyard of the VOC.
