Very rare large Byzantine processional cross, finely engraved with a haloed standing Saint and 3 Alpha signs around. The flaring arms are terminating in projecting disks at the corners. The marble display stand as shown on the pictures is included in the sale. The cross is not permanently fixed and if preferred can be lifted from the stand without causing damage.
Length: ± 29,5 cm (without base)
Total length: ± 34,5 cm (including base)
Width: ± 13 cm

Condition: In good restored condition, clear and detailed engravings, attractive olive brown to green patina, complete with the socket.
Reference for similar cross without the socket: Christies 2007, Lot 282

It is suggested the cross was probably used in baptism ceremonies as the Alpha's symbolize a beginning or starting point of a journey.
In the Bible, Jesus refers to Himself as the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end (Revelation 1:8,11; 21:6; 22:13).
