Papal Bullae act as a formal seal of office used by the Popes to stamp and authenticate documents produced by the curia in either Rome or in this period and example in Avignon.

Pope Gregory XI was the seventh and last Avignon Pope.
He was born in France in 1336 and was elected Pope on 30th December 1370, as successor of Urban V. He died in Rome on 27th March 1378.
His death resulted in the Western Schism and the creation of two rival Papal factions (Pope and Anti-Pope in Rome and Avginon). He was succeeded by Clement VII (Rome) and Urban VI (Avignon).
