Archers thumb ring
Ancient archers wore rings on the bow-thumb to protect it when drawing the bowstring. To draw the bow, the archer would loop the thumb around the string just below the arrow and stabilize it against the first finger. With the release of the bowstring, the ring would both shield the thumb while also allowing the string to swiftly glide past it.
