The legend 'SIGNIS RECEP DEVICTIS GERM (For the standards recovered and the Germans subdued) celebrates Germanicus's recovery of the Legionary standards (signa) which were lost at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. This battle in 9 AD was one of the most disastrous defeats in Roman military history. Three Roman Legions, the XVII, XVIII and XIX, under the command of Publius Quintilius Varus were ambushed and annihilated by a coalition of the Germanic tribes, led by Arminius of the Cherusci.

The defeat permanently halted Roman expansion east of the Rhine and had far-reaching consequences.
