Many Vikings, known as Varangians, served as elite mercenaries in the Byzantine Empire during the 9th and 10th centuries. They were highly valued for their combat skills and loyalty, forming the prestigious Varangian Guard. Some even reached high ranks, with King Harald Hardrada of Norway being a notable example.
