Crusader States coins

Coins from the Crusader States offer a fascinating glimpse into the turbulent history of the medieval Levant. Following the First Crusade, several Christian principalities were established in the eastern Mediterranean, including the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch and the Counties of Edessa and Tripoli. Their rulers produced distinctive silver and bronze coins combining Western European, Byzantine and Islamic influences. This category also includes coins issued by the Venetians in the Levant, reflecting Venice’s important commercial and political presence in the region.

💡 Some Crusader coins closely imitated the familiar Islamic coinage already circulating in the region, occasionally retaining Arabic inscriptions. These imitations were readily accepted by local merchants and demonstrate how trade could bridge religious and cultural boundaries even during periods of conflict.
