Authentic Ancient Beads

Collectible Ancient Beads from Different Cultures

This collection is devoted to individual ancient beads rather than finished jewellery. The selection changes regularly and may include Egyptian faience, Roman and Celtic glass, stone, amber and beads from later periods such as the Viking age.

Ancient beads travelled widely through trade, migration and cultural exchange. A bead found in one region may have been made somewhere else, which makes careful description and attribution particularly difficult.

Individually Described and Photographed

Each listing presents either an individual bead or a small group of related beads. The product page records their material, measurements, estimated date, cultural attribution and condition as accurately as possible. Dating and attribution are based on form, material, manufacturing technique and comparable examples.

Differences in shape, colour, surface and perforation are normal in handmade ancient beads. Wear, deposits and small irregularities are part of the history of the object and are shown in the photographs.

For Collectors and Jewellery Makers

Some customers keep ancient beads as small collectable antiquities, while others use them in new jewellery designs. If a bead is intended to be worn, we recommend using suitable modern fittings and avoiding unnecessary pressure on the bead or its perforation.

Each bead can be supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity in PDF-format upon request. Please contact us if you would like more information about a bead before ordering.

For an additional charge, selected beads and small groups can be supplied with a floating display frame. This provides an attractive way to present the objects without attaching them to a permanent mount. Availability and the most suitable frame size depend on the individual item, so please contact us before ordering to discuss the options and additional cost.
