Palstave axes are characteristic bronze tools and weapons of the Middle and Late Bronze Age. They are distinguished by raised side flanges and a stop-ridge, which helped secure the axe head into a split wooden haft. This made them stronger and more efficient than earlier flat axes. Palstaves were used for woodworking and other practical tasks, but finely made or decorated examples may also have held status, exchange or ceremonial significance.
