During the Civil War, government-issued coins were hoarded as soon as they were released, making it difficult for businesses to conduct transactions. To fill this void, private minters began making Civil War tokens, many with patriotic themes. Civil War tokens are divided into three types: patriotic tokens, store cards and sutler tokens. All three types were used as currency until the United States Congress passed a law on April 22, 1864 prohibiting the issue of tokens or devices for use as currency. On June 8, 1864 an additional law forbade all private coinage.
