Antonio Grimani was Doge of Venice from 1521 to 1523, elected at an advanced age after a long and eventful career in commerce, politics, and war. He came from a wealthy mercantile family and had built his fortune through trade, later rising to high office within the Venetian Republic.

His career was marked by both success and setback, most notably after the Venetian naval defeat at Zonchio in 1499, for which he fell from favour, though he eventually returned to political prominence. Antonio Grimani is often seen as an energetic, ambitious, and resilient figure, whose recovery from public disgrace showed considerable determination and political skill. As Doge, he represented the image of an experienced but aged patrician statesman, and his brief reign belonged to a period in which Venice was carefully navigating the shifting power politics of the Italian Renaissance.
