Francesco Donà was the 79th Doge of Venice, serving from 1545 to 1553 when the Republic remained an important Mediterranean power despite growing political and military pressure from larger Empires. He came from a distinguished Venetian patrician family and had a long public career before his election, holding several high offices within the state.

Francesco Donà is generally portrayed as a serious, disciplined, and cautious man, shaped by long experience in Venetian public office. He seems to have been valued less for brilliance or flamboyance than for steadiness, prudence, and reliability, qualities much admired in the political culture of Venice. His Dogate is generally seen as a period of steady and careful government, reflecting Venice’s preference for experienced, conservative leadership in an age of increasing international tension.
