Francesco Dandolo was Doge of Venice from 1329 to 1339 and was an important figure in the Republic’s political and diplomatic life during the early 14th century. Before becoming Doge, he served Venice as an envoy and statesman, and he became especially known for his role in negotiations with the papacy. During his reign, Venice continued to strengthen its commercial power and overseas interests, helping to reinforce the prestige of Venetian coinage, including the gold ducat, which later became one of the most influential trade coins in the Mediterranean.
