The millarés was a Christian imitation of the square silver dirham associated with the Almohad Caliphate. Produced in Christian-controlled centres around the western Mediterranean, particularly during the 13th century, these coins were intended for trade with North Africa.

Their Arabic inscriptions were often copied imperfectly, resulting in stylised or partly unintelligible legends. Compared with many original Almohad dirhams, millarés frequently have broader flans and less accurate lettering. The issuing authority and mint are often uncertain. These coins illustrate the commercial connections between Christian Europe and the medieval Islamic world.
