Late Roman Red-Slip Oil Lamp with Armoured Bust of Warrior or King

Late Roman mould-made terracotta oil lamp with a rounded body, elongated channelled nozzle and a tall solid handle. Two filling holes flank the central relief, which depicts a draped and cuirassed bust of an oriental King or warrior with high headdress and holding mace sceptre in his left hand, symbolizing power and authority. Stylised palm branches and vegetal ornaments decorate the shoulder. Very rare and interesting oil lamp with unusual decoration. The underside has a circular base ring.

Size: ± 123,2 x 81 mm

Condition: Good and solid condition, clear detailed bust, some wear to the handle and encrustations of sand. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
