Balsamaria or unguentarium were commonly used in the Greek, Roman and Byzantine period. Thin blown-glass bottles first appeared in Cyprus around the middle of the 1st century BC.  Made of glass or ceramic, the bottles were used as containers for ointments, powders, balms or perfumes. The non-porous nature of glass made it ideal for storing liquids.
