The context of this historical jeton refers to the hatred of the Dutch and Flemish for Francis of Anjou, Duke of Alençon (1555-1584). The States General of the Netherlands offered him the crown and in 1582 he was officially welcomed by William of Orange in Vlissingen. He was installed as Duke of Brabant and Count of Flanders, but the provinces of Holland and Zeeland refused to recognise him as their sovereign. On January 18 1583, Anjou led the attack on Antwerp under the disguise of a 'Joyous Entry'. His French troops were ambushed and destroyed in the French Fury. Despite the continuous supporty of William of Orange, the position of Francis became unattainable and he left the country in June 1583. He died a year later in June 1584.
