Ancient Roman bronze seal ring, featuring an oval shaped bezel, engraved with a left-facing bearded profile of Zeus-Ammon. The figure has a prominent facial profile, full beard and abundant locks of hair, together with a curving horn-like element of this syncretic god.

Outside diameter: ± 21 mm

Inside diameter: ± 18,9 - 17,4 mm

Bezel: ± 17 x 11 mm

Good and solid condition, wearable. Traces of malachite patina, minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Quantity

Zeus-Ammon combined the Greek Zeus with the Egyptian god Amun and was recognisable by his ram’s horns. His cult spread throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds, where he was associated with divine authority, kingship and protection. Alexander the Great famously consulted the oracle of Amun at Siwa and was subsequently represented with the god’s distinctive ram’s horns.

Rings and amulets bearing this imagery were highly popular during the Ptolemaic period in Egypt and continued to be widely produced and worn throughout the Roman Empire.
