Romano-Egyptian mosaic glass face bead

A Romano-Egyptian square Mosaic glass face bead showing two finely detailed faces. The faces are representing the mask of Medusa, one of the three monster Gorgon sisters who appear in Greek mythology. The faces are placed on a red and blue background surrounded by a triple border of white, green and dark blue glass.The facial features have been carefully depicted in black- and red glass including the eyes, nose, mouth and hair. The bead is pierced vertically for suspension. These type of beads may also have served as protection against evil. Extremely rare high quality mosaic face bead in vibrant colours.
