The clasped hands motif dates back to ancient Rome, where it symbolized the 'dextrarum iunctio': the formal joining of hands during a marriage ceremony.

Highly popular throughout the Middle Ages, the design evolved to represent marriage, betrothal, love, or deep friendship. The name 'fede' derives from the Italian tradition 'mani in fede', which translates to 'hands clasped in faith'.
