A collection of ten high-quality Chinese export gouache paintings on pith paper, each depicting a different figure or scene. The subjects include a magician, a juggler, a flower seller, a fire-eater and musicians.

The paintings are housed in their original cardboard presentation box, trimmed with brocade and fitted with a glass viewing panel.

Each painting: ± 73.1 × 107.5 mm

Good overall condition. Minor wear to some edges, with no visible major tears. Please refer to the individual photographs for the condition of each painting.

Although traditionally described as ‘rice paper’, the support is actually made from thinly sliced pith taken from the stem of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant. Such brightly coloured export paintings became especially popular during the nineteenth century and frequently depicted Chinese trades, costumes, entertainers and scenes of everyday life.
