Very rare ancient Roman solid silver and gold Eagle figure. The Eagle is presented with its wings folded closely against the body. The bird is modelled with a curved beak, engraved plumage and a long tail, holding a rabbit or hare between its paws. A fine twisted gold chain encircles the neck, with its two ends meeting at a central gold knob and three additional globules suspended below.

Width: ± 9,8 mm

Length: ± 20 mm

Condition

Good solid condition. Attractive dark patina with lighter areas on the raised surfaces. The applied gold ornament remains intact. The statuette is presented on an antique display stand covered in burgundy-red velvet. The fabric shows fading and wear consistent with age, the bottom includes an old collection tag. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Quantity

Small Roman animal statuettes could serve as votive offerings, decorative objects or elements of private religious practice. The precious materials and carefully applied details indicate that this eagle was intended as an object of particular visual and symbolic importance.
