Archer's thumb rings
Ancient archers wore rings on the drawing thumb to protect it when drawing the bowstring. To draw the bow, the archer would loop the thumb around the string just below the arrow and stabilize it against the first finger. With the release of the bowstring, the ring would both shield the thumb while also allowing the string to swiftly glide past it.

The belief in the 'Evil Eye' dates back about 5,000 years and is present in many ancient cultures around the Mediterranean area. Such motifs are used as amulets or talismans to ward off the evil eye. The staring eyes are supposed to reflect the malicious gaze back to the sorcerer.

In Celtic mythology it was a popular design and in many Celtic sites across Europe 'Evil Eye' beads have been discovered. Evil eye beads were popularised by the Phoenicians, Persians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans.
