Probus, Roman Emperor from 276-282 AD during the later 'Crisis of the Third Century'. Under his reign the Roman armies successfully defeated the Germanic invaders in Gaul and put down a rebellion in Britain.
He encouraged the planting of vineyards in Gaul, Spain, and Britain and was evidently killed by troops who resented his discipline and being set to agricultural work.

Probus is especially interesting numismatically because his coinage is abundant, varied, and often very well executed. His antoniniani show a wide range of bust types, military imagery, and reverse legends such as VIRTVS PROBI AVG, RESTITVTOR ORBIS, and SOLI INVICTO. This makes him a popular Emperor for collectors of late 3rd-century Roman coins.
