Knee fibulae were widely used throughout the Roman Empire during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, particularly in the northern and Danubian provinces. These brooches were commonly associated with Roman military dress, although they were also worn in civilian contexts. Their robust construction provided a secure means of fastening cloaks and other garments.
