The Pentagram has been used as a symbol of Christianity, particularly by the Knights Templar, a military order that was active during the Crusades. It symbolised the five wounds of Christ and in the past it was commonly seen as a symbol of protection or a way to ward off evil.

This protective Christian symbolism is also famously illustrated in the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, where the knight Gawain bears the pentagram on his shield as a token of truth, spiritual perfection, and his devotion to the five wounds of Christ.

The transition of the pentagram into a primary symbol of occultism occurred much later, during the mid-19th century, largely due to the French occultist Éliphas Lévi, who distinguished between the upright pentagram and the inverted pentagram as symbols of light and dark magic.
