The eight-pointed cross, also called the Cross of St. John or Maltese cross was used by the Order of St John of Jerusalem since its foundation. It was the emblem of the Knights of Malta and of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem at the time of the Crusades.

Later on, eight-pointed crosses also appear on coins minted by the Grand Masters (obverse of a coin minted under Foulques de Villaret). In 1489, the statutes of the order require all knights of Malta to wear "the white cross with eight points".

Each of the eight points stands for one of the eight virtues of the Order: loyalty, piety, honesty, courage, honour and glory, contempt for death, solidarity towards the poor and the sick, and respect for the Church.
