Very rare large Byzantine bronze processional cross, finely engraved with a haloed standing saint in the orans pose, with both arms bent and raised in prayer. The long cloaked and possibly veiled garment may indicate the Virgin Mary, although the absence of an identifying inscription or other unmistakable Marian attribute prevents a definitive identification.

The flaring arms terminate in projecting discs at the corners and are decorated with incised geometric and linear motifs. The surviving lower socket indicates that the cross was originally mounted on a staff and carried during liturgical ceremonies or religious processions.

The marble display stand shown in the photographs is included in the sale. The cross is not permanently attached and can be removed from the stand without causing damage.

Condition: In good restored condition, clear and detailed engravings, attractive olive brown to green patina, complete with the socket.

The orans pose, with both arms raised in prayer, was widely used in Early Christian and Byzantine art. It is frequently associated with the Virgin Mary, but was also used for other saints and sacred figures.
