Object Description
Medieval iron arrowhead featuring a broad, sharply tapering triangular blade with two prominent barbs (swallowtail form) on either side of the central shaft. Below the blade is an iron twisted shank, gradually widening into a thicker section before continuing into a long, narrow tang intended for attachment to a wooden shaft.
The distinctive barbed design was intended to make withdrawal difficult after penetration.

Good solid condition. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Barbed projectile heads were used throughout the medieval period for hunting and warfare. Their backward projecting barbs were particularly effective at making extraction difficult. Broad bladed examples could inflict substantial wounds, although their precise function depended on the size, weight and construction of the complete projectile.
